The discrimination control provides the ability to reject not just iron, but also other worthless items such as silver paper or even bottle tops and ringpulls. All you need to do is set the control where you want it. At setting "0" all metals will be detected, and at "10" you will only find the most conductive items made from silver or copper. Being a non-motion detector, tuning is required. The Viking 6 ensures you need only do this once, when you first switch the detector on. The retune button is used to automatically restore the correct tuning level in case of drift. The versatility of this detector ensures it is literally a "go anywhere" detector, whether that is the beach, parkland or iron contaminated sites.
